Basti Karma
Considered the mother of all Panchakarma therapies—medicated herbal decoction and oil enemas for systemic Vata harmony.
Traditional Context & Classical Authority
Charaka states that Basti represents half of all medical treatments (Ardha Chikitsa). Since the colon is the primary seat of Vata, balancing this zone restores systemic equilibrium across all bodily tissues.
What the Therapy Involves
Administered in calibrated cycles (Karma, Kala, or Yoga Basti) alternating between nourishing warm herbal oil retention (Anuvasana) and deep channel-cleansing decoction (Niruha/Asthapana). Highly effective for chronic skeletal and neurological conditions.
Who May Consider Consultation for Basti Karma
Traditionally indicated in classical Ayurvedic literature for the following health complaints (subject to individualized Nadi evaluation):
Abdominal massage (Abhyanga) and local fomentation (Nadi Sweda) preceding each session.
Resting on the left side, light digestible meals, and avoidance of long travel during therapy cycles.
Consult for Basti Karma
Prior constitutional assessment is required before commencing any Panchakarma procedure to determine appropriateness and dosing.
