A comprehensive medical guide to Vamana, Virechana, Basti, Nasya, and Raktamokshana, explaining how each procedure purges deep-seated cellular toxins from the body.
Panchakarma represents the pinnacle of Ayurvedic preventive and therapeutic medicine. Derived from 'Pancha' (five) and 'Karma' (therapeutic actions), these are not simple spa treatments; they are rigorous, hospital-grade biological detoxification protocols.
### The Five Classical Shodhanas:
* **Vamana Karma (Therapeutic Emesis):** Targeted Kapha elimination from the stomach and upper thoracic cavities. Indicated for severe chronic respiratory and skin disorders.
* **Virechana Karma (Therapeutic Purgation):** Targeted Pitta elimination from the liver, gallbladder, and small intestine. Restores clear skin and hepatic enzyme equilibrium.
* **Basti Karma (Medicated Enemas):** The master therapy for Vata. Administered into the colon, it calms the nervous system, alleviates chronic arthritis, and relieves lumbar disc strain.
* **Nasya Karma (Trans-nasal Administration):** Administration of medicated drops into the nostrils to clear sinuses, stimulate brain neuro-pathways, and ease cervical tension.
* **Raktamokshana (Blood Purification):** Specialized blood-cleansing using sterile medical leeches (Jalaukavacharana) for localized inflammatory stagnation and venous ulcers.
Each therapy strictly requires Purvakarma (preparation with medicated ghee and steam) and Paschatkarma (dietary recovery).
